Dropping the Public Option, but not really.

The health care bill has been negotiated between the House and Senate but still cannot be agreed upon. One problem facing the passage of the health care bill is the "public option". The public option exists for three reasons as stated by Representative James Clyburn of South Carolina, "create more choice for insurers, create more competition for insurance companies and to contain costs", many liberals in both parties favor a public option, while conservatives believe it is the beginning of the complete government takeover of health care.

Democrats realize the precarious nature of their predicament, their proposed health care bill barely passed through the senate. To drop the public option would cause an increase in support from conservatives who were originally opposed to it. Still, the Democrats would like to see their ideals for the public option, as stated by James Clyburn, to exist within the bill. Clyburn says, "So if we can come up with a process by which these three things can be done, then I'm all for it. Whether or not we label it a public option or not is of no consequence."

It seems for the Democrats that a rose by any other name would smell as sweet. A public option, not labeled the public option but still achieving the same goals is the way Democrats may attempt to pass their controversial health care bill.
