Senators Christopher J. Dodd of Connecticut and Byron L. Dorgan of North Dakota announced that they would retire. This is crucial for the democrats, because at the current time they hold a slight majority over the republicans, which would be lowered if they left. Given the difficulty of passing the health care bill in the senate, the loss of two senators makes it even harder for Obama to pass any bills.
With the retirement of the two senators, there is thought of a domino effect, which will cause some democrats who are debating between re-election to opt out of running. It also may cause less centrist Republicans to lean slightly towards the democratic side. But perhaps this retirement does not mean much to the democratic party. In Connecticut, a republican has a very slim chance of winning because the state's attorney general decided to run. In addition, the republicans have to defend the places of the many senators who retired last year.
