Ending on a Good Note: Is it Enough?

It is hard to look at President Bush's legacy and say anything positive without mentioning a few negatives first. Over the past eight years, Bush has proven to be one of the most unpopular presidents to ever grace the halls of the White House. However, despite the sour notes that riddle his incumbency, Bush is attempting to end his reign in a positive light. He is trying to do so by wholeheartedly accepting the president-elect, Barrack Obama. When Obama visited the White House Bush spent more than an hour discussing domestic and foreign policy in the Oval Office and then gave Obama a personal tour around the White House. Bush has also stated that he is inspired by Obama's victory, and that Barrack truly represents the American dream. The nation now seems to appreciate the way in which Bush is handling Obama's victory and it definitely helps his image. But, is ending on a good note enough to save his presidency from being marked with unpopularity and social disdain? In my opinion, most certainly not. If a song is horrendous for the first 3 minutes, it will still be a bad song even if the last 10 seconds are phenomenal. And that's not to say that, in terms of presidential decisions, the way in which Bush's welcoming of Obama is something that can be described as phenomenal either. Regardless of how smooth Bush makes Barrack Obama's transition, he will still go down in history as the unpopular president that he was for the majority of his eight years in office. To look at it another way, if President Hoover hand built a wheel chair ramp for FDR and single-handily made every room in the White House "handi-capable," would that erase the way he handled the depression? The answer is a big NO; people in Hoovervilles could give two craps if Hoover smoothed the presidential transition for FDR. To sum up this entire scenario, this is way too little way too late to make any difference at all.
